Facebook and Ericsson have announced the opening of an Innovation Lab within Facebook's Menlo Park complex in which they will jointly assist in the development of applications and services based on mobile networks.

The laboratory is part of the Internet.org, an initiative that aims to provide Internet access to even more people. Through this collaboration Facebook wants to continue its penetration in mobile devices segment, in what is included recent purchase of WhatsApp. In the laboratory, Facebook and its partners will be able to simulate different environments for Internet access through cellular networks, not just the latest ones, but older mobile networks based on 2G and 3G technology. The idea is that developers provide an environment that will allow them to develop applications that work well on all types of mobile networks that are equally suited to modern mobile networks that are present in developed markets, as well as for older mobile networks that still dominate the developing markets.

For Ericsson this lab is aligned with its vision of a networked society, which is based on variety of technologies for mobile networks.
