AMD could introduce the next generation of GPU chips, based on the GCN architecture 2.0 in the third quarter of this year. Unofficial sources say two chips have code names Curacao and Hainan, which will be made in the existing 28-nanometer manufacturing process.

GCN 2.0 architecture brings minor modifications in design compared to the current generation of AMD graphics chips, and as expected larger number of stream processors for better performance. Top offer of future generations AMD cards should thus be Curacao XT, GPU with 2304 stream processors, 144 texture units and 48 ROPs, and support for 384-bit memory bus.

Slightly weaker Hainan has 1792 stream processors, 112 texture units and 32 ROPs and a 256-bit wide memory bus. These graphics processors will be the basis for Radeon HD 8970, 8950, 8870 and 8850, which, according to Chiphell's information should have GDDR5 memory. The same will be the models 8850 and 8870 which will have an effective clock speed of 6 GHz (2 GB frame buffer) and 7 GHz for 8950 (4 GB) and 8970 with up to 6 GB of memory in the standard edition. Processor clock of these cards range between 1 and 1.2 GHz.

The availability of reliable information is expected in the coming months, but AMD has previously used to present new generation of graphics cards in the third quarter (by the end of September) with start of sales and mass availability later this year.
