The new iPhone 5 will be available in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and UK to start. When the iPhone 4S was launched it sold in over 4 million devices on first weekend alone. It is quite obvious that iPhone 5 will go beyond that, not only because it is doing so well with preorders but also by making the new model available in two additional countries (Singapore and Hong Kong). In the US it will be available at 356 Apple retail stores starting at 8 a.m. local time on Friday, September 21.
The iPhone 5 will come in white/silver or black/slate, with a suggested retail price of $199 for 16GB, $299 for 32 GB and $399 for 64GB model. Also it will be available through “Apple Online Store (www.apple.com), Apple’s retail stores, and through AT&T, Sprint, Verizon Wireless, select Best Buy, RadioShack, Target and Walmart stores and select Apple Authorized Resellers.” Also depending on the carriers you might be able to get it for only $99 on two year contract. On September 28th the iPhone will be available in 22 more countries including Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
[Ed – Apple did have a good first day with the iPhone 5 selling 2 million units of anything is a pretty good start. However the increase in pre-orders despite the additional wait could also indicate that less people are playing into the hype. They still like the phone, but they might not necessarily buy into all of the Apple PR. This is still not a good thing for Apple as they rely heavily on their PR and marketing for sales. Of course they still have many helping hands in the press and the “analyst” firms who will continue to talk up anything Apple does to help increase their portfolios. What will be interesting is to see if the record sales continue once the core Apple fans have all bought their phones.]
