The company believe that this move will reduce the cost of their Nook division, which operates with losses, mainly due to high competition from Amazon. But they will continue to develop within the company e-book reader Simple Touch and Glowlight, while tablets will be developed in collaboration with independent partners.
According to unconfirmed rumors, the unnamed partner could be the Microsoft. We already heard rumors about one billion dollar offer to Barnes & Noble for their Nook department, and they also invested more than $300 million in Nook Media, a joint venture with Barnes & Noble and book publisher Pearson. This would mean that the next generation of Nook tablet will probably use Windows 8 instead of Android, which would be a big win for Microsoft, which has so far failed to win a larger share of the tablet market.
