“There will come a point, whether it is two or three years from now when, we say, ‘We are doing more in digital media now than we are in physical media.’ And it’s clearly not far away,” said Peter Moore, COO of EA.
When looking at the amount of sales that EA has raked in within the last year due to digital sales we can see a dramatic spike in sales as opposed to previous years. Approximately $1.3 Billion USD was made on digital sales alone.
Other companies turning to digital sales as a means to produce revenue include many free online games that allow users to download and play for free. In order to make money these companies will sell items or content for real money to make a profit-Thus, another case in which companies are turning to digital media sales.
[Ed – We talked about this in another article today. Microsoft hopes to use EA to spread the idea that Windows 8/RT and its Xbox live distribution system is a good thing for consumers. This is despite other large names in the gaming industry like Gabe Newell and John Carmack claiming otherwise. While digital sales are increasing it is because of people services like Steam and the freedom they offer and not the close eco system that Microsoft and EA would like.]
