Specifically, the flexible OLED screen that was developed at UCLA can be folded several times and stretched to twice its size without consequences. Like most other solutions for flexible screens, these too are based on OLED technology.
The UCLA emphasize that they have specifically focused on the durability of the solution, which means that they wanted to present material that is more than just a technology demonstration copy. Featured OLED screen was stretched 1,000 times 30% above its original size, and after it was released back to its original size it continued to operate normally. It will be interesting to see how will they apply it to smartphones and similar devices.
[Ed - We saw concept art of this type of screen when Asus showed of their futuristic designs for wearable computing devices back in 2011. It looked like a pipe dream, but now it might be much closer to reality...]
