Monitor has a constant refresh rate (e.g. 60 Hz), while the speed of sending frames from the video card to the monitor may vary, and if you fall below the monitor refresh rate it causes already known artifacts. G-Sync consist of a special module that will be installed to monitor (works on DisplayPort interface), and a hardware and software support on the graphics card .
Monitor should thus adjust the speed of the display capabilities to GPU and render an image only when it receives a complete new frame from video card. Technology supports Nvidia chips GK110, GK104 and GK106 (from GeForce GTX 650 Ti Boost), while production of gaming monitors with these modules was already announced by Asus, BenQ and ViewSonic .
Asus has already demonstrated a modified version of the monitor VG248QE with G- Sync module, which will go on sale in the first quarter of next year at a price of $399, while the solutions of other manufacturers will arive a bit later in the 2014.
