International company Nielsen specialized  in market research, announced the results which were collected from their systems for data collection within the music industry. System SoundScan has been recording music sales in the U.S. and Canada, while the BDS was recording released music tracks on radio, television and the Internet in the same countries. According to data collected in the U.S., in the first six months of the 2013, the sales of albums and individual music tracks fell by 4.6% compared to the same period last year. On the other hand, the music streaming increased by about 24% to 51 billion streams.

The best song on the list of streamed music was Harlem Shake (streamed 438 million times) in the form of a music video clip which has received countless home designed remakes. Second song is Thrift Shop by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis with 187 million streams. Sales of physical albums on CD continues to fall, now to 14.2% (approximately 60.8 million albums was sold) in comparison to last year, while digital sales increased by 6.3%. Buying individual music tracks fell by 2.3% and 682 million copies were sold.

There are many fans of old records so vinyl sales increased by 33.5% compared to last year. Nearly 3 million vinyl records was sold in the first six months of the 2013. This clearly shows how technology affects music market. We all have smartphones with tons of storage so no one really uses cds, dvds or other physical storage, it is much cheaper just to download it in a digital form, or simply listen to streamed music.
