Saudi Arabia against Skype, Viber and WhatsApp

ban

In Saudi Arabia, there is no joking about the data traffic that comes out of the country, and therefore apps such as Skype, Viber and WhatsApp could soon be in serious problem. The government has announced through the telecom operators that if they don’t start start to censor messages sent from these services, they will seriously think about how to ban their use.

According to an unnamed source from the telecommunications operator Saudi Telecommunications Co. (STC) National Commission for Communications and Information Technology gave an IM service providers deadline until Saturday to respond or they block them completely.

On the other hand, an unnamed source from the ICT sector claims to actually behind this fuss are all telecom operators like STC, a then Mobily and Zain, which under the guise of the need for censorship wants to get rid of competition. Specifically, SMS and MMS are much less attractive to customers due to the aforementioned services, and telecom operators see this as if these services are stealing money out of their pockets.
