SkyDrive becomes OneDrive

Last month, Microsoft officially announced that the SkyDrive service, because of a dispute over the name, will be renamed to OneDrive, a change which came into force from today. Existing users of the SkyDrivea will not see significant changes in applications and their functionality, since it will all work the same as before.

Applications for Windows 8, Vista and Mac, as well as their mobile and Xbox versions of today are available for upgrade, while users of Windows 8.1 and Office 2013 on this change have to wait for a bit more. Along with the name change Microsoft has introduced a new way for users to earn extra storage capacity, modeled on Dropbox and the similar services.

So, with 7 GB coming in the basic free package, the user can with recommendation of the service to other users earn an additional 5 GB (500 MB per new user). In addition, using some of their mobile applications (for WP, iOS or Android) and turning on the options for automatic backup of photos from mobile phones to OneDrive, users will get an additional 3 GB of storage space.
