Taiwan- based panel makers expect most orders to come from tablets and notebooks

In the second half of 2012 most panel makers stationed in Taiwan expect their biggest orders to come from the rising tablet and notebook markets. Customers want more and more from mobile devices and as we know there are a lot of new tablets coming out just before the holiday season. AU Optronics said that they expect their shipments of small and medium size segments to grow even more in the last 2 quarters of 2012. Panels in near future will continue to have higher and higher resolution as well as reduced power consumption. As far as size is concerned most shipments will be of 7 to 10-inch panels as they are the most popular.

AUO and Chimei Innolux will also increase notebook panel production due to the Windows 8 release coming shortly. Various ultrabooks are expected to launch by the end of the year, and considering all the fuss with new Microsoft OS we expect sales to be good. Apparently the Chinese government may apply higher tariffs on imported TV panels this means that Chinese TV panel makers are putting a lot of pressure on their Taiwanese colleagues to increase their production before this happens.

During the last CEATAC, consumer-electronics conference in Tokyo, one of main attractions was 4K TV's. 4K stands for their approximately 4,000 pixels horizontal resolutions (3840x2160), doubling the 1080p standard in both dimensions. Starting in early 2013 AOU and Chimei will be manufacturing 4kx2k TV panels in the hope that they can compete in the high-end TV segment with Samsung and LG panels. Do not be surprised with this 4K resolution because we can easily expect 8K (7680x4320) TV's in few years.

[Ed – 4k TVs and other devices have been in the works for about two years. Many were in production as far back as 2010. The problem was mostly with old inventory as well as an issue with building the hardware to support this resolution at the consumer level. Although 4k is an exciting move, it is not as exciting as what will happen in the mobile market as we see new technology to build panels thinner, lighter, more vibrant and also to incorporate some serious circuitry directly into the panel. It will be an exciting next two years.]
