At AMD’s press conference during Computex 2014 they showed off their new Kaveri mobile CPUs and made some pretty bold claims. The first of which was that these new APUs were ready and able to be compared directly to Intel Core i5 and i7 CPUs and in many cases beat them in terms of performance. The Kaveri line up is not exactly new as the desktop flavors were launched last year, however AMD is saying that the new mobile versions are something very special.

Richland – AMD's answer to Haswell

richland

Richland are actually not so new even despite the new name, they are actually more or less chips based on the current Piledriver x86 architecture and VLIW4 graphics architecture known to us from previous APU's. A step forward was achieved in terms of performance due to a higher operating speeds of x86 cores but also of integrated GPU. A10-6800K, the fastest new APU also boasts support for the 2,133-megahertz memory which is quite important for users who intend to use the integrated graphics.

AMD kicked an interesting product out the door today in the form of their Operton X-Series APU SoC. You might remember that the possibility of this APU was leaked a while ago by an inadvertent inclusion on a slide showing the Operton X logo. Everyone knew this was going to fold over into an x86 APU based SoC and the launch was just a matter of time. Now the lid is off and we can talk about the Opteron X (Kyoto) and where AMD sees this new product in their server business and in the market as a whole.

AMD to Dive Deeper Into The ARM Pond Soon...

Rory-01

A couple of days ago the internet lit up with AMD’s announcement of their new Jaguar SoCs. These new G-series embedded processors were boasting some rather healthy improvements in performance including a claim of a 113% increase in performance over older x86 SoCs and a rather bold claim of a 125% increase in performance over Intel’s Atom. But while the new embedded APU with its 8000 series GPU should have been big news all on its own, what really caught people’s attention was a little x in the corner. As it turns out this X is intended to denote an x86 version of the G-Series SoC…

Here come the Jaguars

AMD expanded their offer of embedded solutions with a new generation APU's based on the Jaguar architecture. The new APU's, or better to say SoC's because beside x86 cores and graphics combine and southbridge functions with TDP ranging from 9-25 watts depending on the model, and will replace existing embedded APU Solutions from Series G on the market. Architecture Jaguar is used in the chip that will power the upcoming Playstation 4, and probably a new Xbox.

There has been an interesting shift in the market over the last few months as we watch another former AMD engineer/executive return to the fold. AMD has announced that Raja Koduri will be bringing his graphic expertise back to AMD. Koduri was preceded by Mark Papermaster and Jim Keller who both left Apple for AMD last year. These returns are interesting in that Apple was once seen as the company to work for and, according to many analysts, had an almost unlimited earning and growth potential. However, after the death of Steve Jobs Apple has slumped and the once loud predictions of Apple reaching $1,000 per share are long gone as the stock continues to drop.

AMD had their big CES-2013 press conference yesterday and while the tone was the typical joyous “we are doing great” one that you hear in any press conference from a tech company these days there was something else behind the happy faces and smiles. As we watched and listened to the different speakers we heard this subtle tone and it was an apology. AMD’s message for 2013 is that they will not only promise better performance and competing products, but they will execute and deliver on those products.

AMD cuts wafer orders

amd

AMD, in the last quarter of this year significantly reduced wafer orders from GlobalFoundries. According to the original agreement, AMD was supposed to but $500 Million worth of wafers from GlobalFoundries, but that figure is now down to about $ 115 million. AMD CEO Rory Read tried to cool the situation by saying “Today's announcement demonstrates that the long-term strategic partnership between AMD and GlobalFoundries continues to benefit both companies,” but it's obvious that this was something that AMD certainly did not want.

Also, the tablet should be powered by a Qualcomm chipset, unlike the Nvidia Tegra 3 which is in the current edition of Surface RT.
