The Decline of Online Music Sales

Written by

Reading time is around minutes.

This year, according to data analyzed by Nielsen SoundScan, in the United States over the Internet was sold 1.01 billion songs, which is a decrease of 4% compared to the 2012. The total number of downloads of digital music content decreased by 1%, while the number of downloads of digital albums grow by 2% compared to last year.

This is a great change at the global level, as the music industry since the release of iTunes in 2003 regularly recorded even double-digit annual growth. Experts and analysts disagree about the main causes of this decline, but many as one of the causes referred to the increasing popularity of streaming music services like Spotify or YouTube.

Just last year, revenue from streaming music grew by 59%, and the same trend has continued this year, and music professionals are hoping that despite the small number of downloads their earnings will not fall significantly.
