Ubisoft wants new consoles

Ubisoft’s boss Yves Guillemot believes that the current generation of consoles has reached the end of their lives and that the market urgently needs new hardware. He said this in an interview with the Polygon. He feels that the current generation of consoles has simply been here for too long and it is about time that the market receives the next generation of the consoles.

“The transition has been very long. We need new consoles and at the end of the cycle generally the market goes down because there are less new IPs, new properties, so that damaged the industry a little bit. I hope next time they will come more often” Yves said. Guillemot says that at the beginning of the cycle developers and publishers are more eager to take risks and selling games goes much better than it is in the case when the console has been available for a few years.

“Everybody who is taking risks and innovating is welcome because there are lots of hardcore gamers and those guys want new things, where the mass market will be more interested in having the same experience” Yves stated. Sales of games in recent times are really declining, and many publishers have reported significant losses in their financial statements. Despite this, some publishers and developers like Rockstar or Naughty Dog, believe that right now is the perfect time for releasing new games.

[Ed – In general the gaming market has become rather boring as development and publishing companies push out refreshes of the same theme. In more than a few cases the games are not even worth the time to download them (or pay for them) as they are exceptionally short and what little game play there is gets buried under cut scenes that do nothing for the gamer. Unfortunately bringing out new consoles is not likely to help this… we simply need some new game ideas…]
