Samsung presented its ATIV S family of phones that should be the main stars of WP8 software. Their smartphones were presented in Berlin and are first the confirmed WP8 devices. They will feature 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display, 1.5 GHz dual-core Qualcomm processor, 8Mpix rear and 1.9Mpix front camera. It will have 2,300 mAh battery, (only) 1GB of ram, and will come in two versions, 16GB and 32GB.

At only 8.7mm it is pretty thick, and with brushed aluminum body certainly looks very neat. Storage will also be expandable with microSD cards. Nokia will launch their three WP8 Apollo devices on September 5th and will carry the names “Arrow“, “Phi”, and “Atlas“. “Arrow” and “Atlas” are supposed to be mid-range and nearly identical devices, while “Phi” will be high-end and feature curved display. So far it looks like WP8 will be decent competition for Android and iOS but we are yet to see how users will respond to it.

[Ed – we imagine that Apple is also annoyed about the Samsung phones considering their stance that Samsung copies everything. But we will have to wait and see what, if anything, Apple does about the new Windows Phone devices from Samsung. There are a few that think Apple will not do anything because it would put them at odds with Microsoft (someone that Apple still does need). If this is the case it would come close to confirming that Apple’s suits against Samsung were not so much about protecting their IP, but about hurting Android and a serious competitor in the market. Windows Phone 8 simply is not a threat to Apple or Android and will not be any time soon.]
