2.5D flexible screen from MIT

obake

Scientists from the MIT's Media Lab have presented the concept of flexible screens that you can literally pinch, pull out or push in.

Stretch touchscreen, called Obake, is basically the interactive screen on an elastic surface. Based on user interaction with the elastic surface, camera with the possibility of measuring the depth estimates movements  and provides appropriate instructions to linear actuators in order to make changes on the surface of the screen. In this way, the surface can make a "mountain" or indentations, and the screen can provide adequate resistance to our movements.

Scientists call Obake 2.5 D interface, and point out that it is a 3D surface on which they projected 2D interface. Will this be the "key“ for smartphones and many other gadgets with flexible screens that we eagerly expect is yet to be seen, but it sure looks interesting and promising.
