With the new version of the standard, the maximum throughput would be doubled to 20 Gbps in channels and in all directions. Increased speed, for example, will allow simultaneous transmission and display of 4K video at full speed. Connections for Thunderbolt physically will be thinner than the current, but will be retained compatibility with existing devices. New specification of the standards will become available to producers for use over the next few months. The first devices based on the new Thunderbolt are expected in early 2014.
Although the interface is present rather small number of devices, Intel expects bigger expansion of the standard, and argues that currently they have about 200 companies that have secured the rights to use Thunderbolt.
