In Google claim that their VP9 codec uses almost 50% less bandwidth compared to older H.264 standard. So the advantage is the possibility of faster and more efficient streaming of any content, especially HD and 4K content of the new generation from YouTube and other services to TVs, smartphones, tablets, PCs and other devices.
VP9 codec is unencumbered with licenses, unlike H.264 standards for which it is necessary to pay a license. Also, VP9 participate in rivalry with H.265 or HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) for the title of the official 4K codec. More details about VP9 codec can be found out via the attached video.
