Nokia starts free music streaming service, again

Despite Nokia's failure with Ovi Music Unlimited they have decided to give their music streaming aspirations a second chance, so Lumia users will be able to listen streaming music for free. The service was available in Europe since last year and now it will be available in US too. The music service will be completely ad-free, and music will be picked and kept up to date by an expert team of US musicologists. It will offer 150 exclusive playlists so everyone will find something they like. This announcement comes days before they will have news event with Microsoft in which they are expected to launch one or more WP8 smartphones.

Nokia said “The playlists span a wide spectrum of musical genres from underground Detroit house tracks to New York Philharmonic favorites. Nokia Music also offers playlists created by global artists such as Lana Del Rey, Lady Gaga and Rihanna”. Also users will be able to create their own personal soundtracks based on preferred artists. Users will be able to use it without registration or subscription, “Nokia Music lets consumers immerse themselves in the dulcet tones of their favorite artists without being disrupted,” Playlists will also be available offline so they expect to provide maximum convenience for their users, which is pretty nice if you consider how rapidly a battery runs down if you use 3G or LTE.

According to Nokia's vice president of entertainment Jyrki Rosenberg, “The USA is the most vibrant and competitive digital music market in the world -- by a wide margin”. He also said that "We have worked extra hard to ensure our service meets the expectations of the demanding, active and inspired music fans in the USA. I would like to challenge everyone to try Nokia Music and see just how easy and enjoyable the service is to use.” Hopefully for Nokia this will help them survive against iOS and Android; they already decided to phase out Symbian smartphones and completely turn to their collaboration with Microsoft that brought Lumia series of smartphones. Nokia Music app can be downloaded by Nokia Lumia 900 or Nokia Lumia 710 users for free.

[Ed – the Nokia music service appears to be very limited as they are talking about pre-prepared playlists. It is the sort of thing you might listen to if you had no choice. It is true you can create your own playlist, but we wonder if it will be able to compete with services like iTunes and the openness of Android phones where you simply upload the tracks you want (regardless of where you get them). We do know that Windows Phone 8 will also have Xbox Music (which is the repurposed Zune music service) which could make the Nokia Music service obsolete very quickly…]
