So long Messenger

skypeupdate

Microsoft has announced that their instant messenger service will be shutting down on March 15. Messenger functionality will be completely replaced with Skype. This will be the company's only VoIP and IM service moving forward, as Microsoft has previously said.

In an e-mail Microsoft sent to users they indicate that users can now log in to Skype with the same user account they have previously used on Messenger. All contacts from Messenger will be migrated into Skype and messages will be exchanged as before. After March 15 Messenger will be available for usage for some time, but only in, China because there is a service provided by a local company which Microsoft has entrusted with the managing of the messenger service.

Microsoft bought Skype in May 2011 for the amount of 8.5 billion dollars. The service currently has about 280 million active users per month, which is about 100 million more than when it was purchased.
