Thin terabytes from Toshiba

Toshiba have announced mass production of thin 2.5 inch drives with rotating plates. The housing of drive is only seven millimeters thin.

According to Toshiba representatives, this was done to fulfill wishes of customers for high capacity in slim notebooks and tablets that SSDs still does not allow, at least not at a price comparable with the standard discs. The new drives will be available in capacities of 750 GB and 1 TB. Data will be stored on two plates with rotational speed of 5,400 rpm and 12 ms seeking time.

Deliveries of discs have already started for tablet and PC manufacturers, and first devices with them should be coming to market early next year.
