FIFA finally approves Goal Line Technology

After successful testing of GLT (Goal-Line Technology) at the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan in December last year, FIFA decided that the technology can accurately determine whether the ball passed the goal line or not, will be officially introduced at the World Cup in Brazil 2014.

So far it has not been exactly decided which technology will be implemented, but there are currently two major candidates, Hawk Eye and GoalRef systems. GoalRef works on the principle of detecting the passage of the ball through the lines of magnetic induction, while the Hawk Eye is a computer system that visually follow the path the ball and calculates its position.

FIFA has also launched a contest in which the interested companies who wish to implement their technology can participate for competitions that may occur by mid-March of this year, while the final decision of the system which would become the official FIFA GLT technology, will be made in April this year.

Selected system will then debut on the all matches FIFA Confederations Cup in 2013, which takes place from 15th to 30th June this year in Brazil. Teams competing will be Brazil, Spain, Japan, Italy, Mexico, Uruguay, Tahiti and Nigeria.
