Galaxy Gear will soon be compatible with non-Galaxy devices

After Samsung at their conference at the IFA in Berlin presented their smart watch Galaxy Gear, many wanted to know whether it can work also work with other Android devices and not just Galaxy ones. Specifically, Galaxy Gear currently only works with the Galaxy Note 3 phablet, making it much less interesting to those users who do not intend to buy the product just to be able to enjoy the benefits of Samsung's smart watch.

Ryan Bidan, product marketing manager of Samsung, have confirmed that it is a question of time when the Galaxy Gear will be compatible with other devices. "Right now the specific APIs and functionality are tied to the Galaxy Note 3. For obvious reasons we are looking for additional devices to support it" says Bidan, "We will announce those when they come, but right now it is Galaxy Note 3 specific."

Samsung uses Bluetooth 4.0 LE to pair up Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Gear, which is a part of Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. Android 4.3 is currently available on the Nexus 4 and some other devices, but the Galaxy Gear can not work with them, because of certain interfaces that are built into the Galaxy Note 3 so it can be compatible with smart watch. Although it was announced that after the upgrade to Android 4.3 next month, Galaxy S4, S3 and Note II will be compatible with Gear, it is certainly important for Samsung that customers that have non-Galaxy smartphones also buy their smart watch, so it will be interesting to find out which will be the first non-Galaxy devices to get support for it.
