Patent Trolling Costs Companies in the US $29 Billion in Direct Costs...

animal_farm-pigsWe have often written that the continuous stream of patent lawsuits and injunctions that are pushed around the globe are costly, dangerous and anti-consumer, but now someone has actually gone out and done the math to find out just how much damage they do per year. The study performed by James E. Bessen and Michael E Meurer both from the Boston University School of Law states that in 2011 more than $29 Billion (with a B) in direct costs were incurred all because of what are called Non-Practicing Entities (most call them patent trolls). This $29 Billion also came during a down economy and affected small to medium sized businesses the most.

Orbitz Driving Mac Owners to Higher Priced Offerings Than PC Owners

17It is a common comment that the people that buy Apple products will pay more to get less. Although there are some that have “done the math” and calculated the hardware costs a proof of this it is still not where near a “fact” (it is fun to say though). People tend to like what they like and will pay for what they want. As I was told before during a class on sales “a good deal is a state of mind”. If you think it is a good deal then, guess what, it is.

AMD Brags About One Of Their Products with Intel Inside

AMD_logoYou know, there is a certain irony when a company brags about a product that contains their competitor’s hardware. Unfortunately for AMD that is exactly the position they are in right now. AMD recently bought the company Seamicro (for a hand sum) for the purposes of gaming their interconnect technology. Intel picked up Cray’s interconnect unit shortly after, but there is talk that their deal pre-existed the AMD one. However, regardless of who bought what first AMD bought the whole company while Intel only picked up a certain division.

Microsoft Begins To Work On Its Own Mythology; Too Bad the Facts Don't Add Up

MS-MythOk, it seems that no matter what we do, we keep getting pulled back to this topic. We have to say this in plain and simple terms. Microsoft did not develop surface due to lack of confidence in their partners. This is a ridiculous notion to present and it is one that keeps popping up in the news. I am not even sure how this rumor got started as to say that Microsoft wanted to show their partners how to build a tablet is sort of comical considering their past hardware efforts. It will end up hurting Windows 8 sales as well as Microsoft parnter sales.

Do Computers Dream of LolCats?

GLaDOSAs a kid I remember watching movies and TV where the world was threatened by a machine that had become aware and the heroes of the story had to fight for their lives to defeat it. I also remember vividly and fondly playing the game Paranoia where the Central Computer (which is insane and paranoid) controls every aspect of your short life. It seems that there is a fear of machines becoming sentient that pervades our subconscious. It is perhaps the fact that we are fragile and have a brief existence while a machine is considerable more long lived.
