Apple VP of Hardware, Bob Mansfield Set to Retire

News_3d_Apple_Logo_102Apple has lost another VP of Hardware this time to retirement. Bob Mansfield, how replaced Mark Papermaster (you know him, he is at AMD now) in 2010 is retiring after being with Apple since 1999. Bob has been the lead of iPhone and iPad hardware since 2010, but before that he was in charge of dealing with Mac hardware (beginning in 2005).

Google's Nexus 7 Leaks Out Before the I/O Conference Kicks Off; Google Quickly Pulls the Pages.

nexus7-intAlthough it was rumored (and possibly shown off at CES 2012) the long awaited Nexus 7 (I wonder is the Tyrell corporation was involved) 7-inch tablet from Google is coming today to be officially launched during the Google I/O conference. The new tablet will feature 1GB of RAM and a quad (quint?) core Tegra 3 under the screen. For capacity you will get either 8 or 16GB and all of the usual trimmings (no 3G though). The pricing and size would indicate it is intended to rival both the iPad and the Kindle Fire.

*** Update It is live, real and you can buy this new tablet from Google and Asus!***

MPAA, RIAA and The US DoJ Employing Seige Tactics Against MegaUpload and Kim Dotcom

49019-castle-under-siege-illustrationAlthough we have covered some of the MegaUpload case we have not really followed all of the ins and outs in the troubled and lopsided case. On the one hand almost everyone can agree that people should pay for their content, but in most cases the opinions about what has been done to the cloud storage service are against what the US DoJ has done. On the word of the MPAA and RIAA (yes it was only their accusations) the FBI and others began a costly investigation into MegaUpload and in the end came up with an indictment against a non-US based company (where the US has no jurisdiction) and seven members of its management team (most of which have never entered the US).

Apple Granted Another Patent Despite Clear Evidence of Prior Art

14621rotten_appleWow our patent system is truly messed up in the US. It seems that the US Patent office again has granted a patent to Apple despite CLEAR EVIDENCE of existing prior art. What is going on in that office? The patent that was uncovered today is patent number 8,207,906 and on the surface covers a docking station that provides wireless charging AND a reradiative antenna for boosting wireless signals. However the last line of the patent application makes it clear that Apple is looking to other items. “In other examples, passive coupling is used to charge a rechargeable battery in the handheld device”

Judge Koh Flip/Flops and Grants Ban Against Galaxy Tab 10.1 After Denying It...

73There is an old saying that says your first instinct is right. We are told this over and over again as kid as a warning against going back and changing our answers on test and for other “life lessons”. It is a lesson that most of us take with us through the rest of our lives. Unfortunately it does not appear to be one that Judge Lucy Koh remembered. In an unusual twist she is not upholding an Apple requested injunction against Samsung that she denied earlier.
