Pete Hines from Bethesda dislikes the idea of having to deal with new consoles
The Bethesda vice president of PR and marketing has been very busy these days. Besides dealing with complaining from PS3 users about the lack of Dawnguard on their platform, he also gave his opinion regarding today’s consoles. “I don’t think the current generation of consoles are holding us back. There is still plenty that we are able to do visually, technically and from a story-telling standpoint. And there’s this huge built-in audience now.” According to him there are two main problems, and probably no one can argue with him on these.
Valve's Big Picture arrived, Bringing PC Gaming to the TV
The new Big Project from Valve that is supposed to bring Steam to the TV and in some ways create competition for today’s consoles has been released today. It will transfer the existing Steam UI to one more practical for a TV screen such as huge icons, oversized text and big menus. This will be similar to the Xbox and Play Station UIs. Now PC users will finally be able to connect their machines to the TV and start playing laid back on their sofa without thinking will they have to push some keyboard buttons or navigate around with mouse, they can do that all with just gamepad.
The International 3 brings CS:GO?
Although it has been less than a week since The International has finished we have the first rumors about next year’s event. After Dota 2 is launched another Valve game is supposed to be introduced and that is Counter Strike: Global Offensive. Since the very first version CS brought new content and maintained player interest while gaining tons of new ones even though some of that content was pretty bad (like vehicles in Beta 7.0) Valve managed to polish the product to feed gamers’ appetites. Today around half a million players are estimated to play regularly on more than 200,000 servers.
Is Valve Working On Hardware Or a Way To Interact With It?
The rumor mill is all a flutter today with the discovery of a job posting on Valve’s website looking for an industrial designer. This posting has fueled the speculation that Valve will official enter the hardware business in the near future. Earlier this year Gabe Newell made the statement that “If we have to sell hardware we will”. This comment combined with Newell’s dislike of Windows 8 (he called it a catastrophe), Valve’s work on porting Steam and Valve games to Linus, and a few other clues could mean that Valve is considering the fabled Valve Box or even a full gaming “PC” of their own.
Black Mesa Half Life Mod Set to Launch on September 14th, Get Your Crowbars Ready...
Almost 14 years ago the gaming world was introduced to a new hero. He was not a former covert agent, Special Forces operative or even an ex-cop with an attitude. Instead he was a Doctor of Theoretical Physics from MIT who was in the probationary period of this job. This hero’s name was Gordon Freeman. Freeman had just been hired at a highly secret government research facility called Black Mesa and despite his advanced degree was only being used to perform menial tasks. After surviving an catastrophic accident (the resonance cascade) he has to put his brains to use in not only finding a way out the quickly deteriorating Black Mesa, but in closing a portal that he helped to open which was allowing alien monsters to spill out onto earth. This sums up the amazing game that we all know as Half Life.
The International 2012 has started
The Biggest annual DotA 2 tournament has begun and it is hosted by Valve at the Benaroy Hall in Seattle. 16 teams are invited to tournament and top the 8 receive prize money. Last year the Ukrainian Natus Vincere (Na'Vi) won first place and $1 million dollars in prize money. EHOME (China) came in second and walked away with $250,000, while Scythe Gaming (Singapore) placed third and won $150,000. This year the prize pool is the same ($1.6 million), and last year’s champions are here to defend the title. The main contenders for the title from Natus Vincere will be DK, who are called the “Galacticos” for making huge transfers, Complexity gaming who won The Defense 2 (6,000€ tournament), and mTw who won Dreamhack in the summer of 2012.
Valve introducing The Big Picture
“They've got the big screen, now give them the big picture.” is a good parable for Valve's new project. The Big Picture is basically Steam for TV and controllers. Users will be able to plug a PC into their TV and enjoy gaming on a big screen instead of pc monitor. You are probably wondering what has stopping you from doing that now, and the answer is nothing really, but dont you hate when you have to use keyboard and mouse to navigate, or when you transfer from a 20-something inch monitor to a bigger TV the icons seems too small? For many the overall experience feels a lot worse than just staying on PC.
Will Half Life 3 be announced at Gamescom?
There is a new and exciting rumor that Valve might make some sort of announcement about Half Life 3. This is possibly one of the most anticipated sequels there is. The franchise that was kicked off by the little known Valve and published by Sierra Games quickly won fame for its game play, graphics, immersive storyline and unforgettable characters. Not the least of these characters is the hero Gordon Freeman. Half Life sparked multiple spin-offs and mods including Portal which features rival Aperture Science.
Digital video game sales on the rise
Within the last few years more and more developers have been turning to digital sales as a means to sell their games. In fact, many companies can base nearly their entire success on digital sales. Companies such as Steam and Origin are some of the first that come to mind when consumers think of buying games online. Major companies such as EA and Activision Blizzard are expecting digital sales to exceed physical media sales within the next few years.
Valve entering non-gaming software field
The Company that is behind the Steam download platform is set to open its distribution system to non-gaming software. They stated that “... the first set of software titles is heading to Steam, marking a major expansion to the platform most commonly known as a leading destination for PC and Mac games.”. The change was made becasue our customers requested it, Mark Richardson, Valve’s business development representative said “The 40 million gamers frequenting Steam are interested in more than playing games, They have told us they would like to have more of their software on Steam, so this expansion is in response to those customer requests.”
