Independent Dev's Twitter Rant gets Game Booted out of Steam
Social Media can be a great thing if used properly. However, lately people tend to use it for… well let’s call it ranting. I cannot count the number of rants and tantrums I have seen on Twitter, Facebook and even Google+. It seems that some people feel that social media sites are their own personal forums to share every thought they have no matter how positive or negative it is. When you point this out to the ranters, you are likely to be told that it is their page and you do not have to read it. Well… that is the problem, you never really know just who might be reading your rant and what they might do about it.
CryTek Could be Lending Support to the Linux Gaming Movement
When Microsoft announced Windows 8 there were many consumers and people in the industry that raise their eyebrows. Here was an OS designed to integrate with Microsoft cloud services and gaming products. It seemed like a bad move for Microsoft as it put them in competition with many companies that developed games and software for the PC. Still some held out that even though Windows 8 would be more integrated into the Microsoft Eco system than ever it would not mean they could not use whatever software or application they wanted. Microsoft even seemed to confirm this in a few of their building Windows 8 blog posts.
Windows 8 second on Steam
Because of the Windows Store, fearing for their own distribution service Steam, Valve's director Gabe Newell has once claimed that Windows 8 is a disaster unlike he has seen before and that user will definitely want to replace it with something better. In the meantime, the market has punished Microsoft's bad marketing, and Newell has released Steam for OSX and Linux, making them very interesting alternatives to Windows.
Layoffs at Valve
Lately there have been some rumors going around saying that Valve plans to fire some of their employees, and now Gamasutra brought news that on Monday they fired 25 workers. After contacting the recently laid-off, one gets the impression that this relegation had nothing to do with the individual's work, but global challenges Valve is faced with.
Valve's Big Picture arrived, Bringing PC Gaming to the TV
The new Big Project from Valve that is supposed to bring Steam to the TV and in some ways create competition for today’s consoles has been released today. It will transfer the existing Steam UI to one more practical for a TV screen such as huge icons, oversized text and big menus. This will be similar to the Xbox and Play Station UIs. Now PC users will finally be able to connect their machines to the TV and start playing laid back on their sofa without thinking will they have to push some keyboard buttons or navigate around with mouse, they can do that all with just gamepad.
Is Valve Working On Hardware Or a Way To Interact With It?
The rumor mill is all a flutter today with the discovery of a job posting on Valve’s website looking for an industrial designer. This posting has fueled the speculation that Valve will official enter the hardware business in the near future. Earlier this year Gabe Newell made the statement that “If we have to sell hardware we will”. This comment combined with Newell’s dislike of Windows 8 (he called it a catastrophe), Valve’s work on porting Steam and Valve games to Linus, and a few other clues could mean that Valve is considering the fabled Valve Box or even a full gaming “PC” of their own.
Valve introducing The Big Picture
“They've got the big screen, now give them the big picture.” is a good parable for Valve's new project. The Big Picture is basically Steam for TV and controllers. Users will be able to plug a PC into their TV and enjoy gaming on a big screen instead of pc monitor. You are probably wondering what has stopping you from doing that now, and the answer is nothing really, but dont you hate when you have to use keyboard and mouse to navigate, or when you transfer from a 20-something inch monitor to a bigger TV the icons seems too small? For many the overall experience feels a lot worse than just staying on PC.
Will Half Life 3 be announced at Gamescom?
There is a new and exciting rumor that Valve might make some sort of announcement about Half Life 3. This is possibly one of the most anticipated sequels there is. The franchise that was kicked off by the little known Valve and published by Sierra Games quickly won fame for its game play, graphics, immersive storyline and unforgettable characters. Not the least of these characters is the hero Gordon Freeman. Half Life sparked multiple spin-offs and mods including Portal which features rival Aperture Science.
Microsoft Taps Former Microsoft Employee Peter Moore, COO of EA, To Try And Bolster Windows 8 Gaming Potential
Remember how we told you that Microsoft was going to pull out all of the PR and marketing tricks they can muster to try and convince people that Windows 8 is a good thing? Well now they are trying to counter the effects of the recent comments by top names in gaming; most notably Gabe Newell of Valve and John Carmack of id. If you do not remember what these two said we will boil it down here. Gabe Newell stated that Windows 8 was a “catastrophe” which John Carmack stated there was “no reason to upgrade”.
Gabe Newell Calls Windows 8 a "catastrophe for everyone in the PC space"
It seems that Gabe Newell formerly from Microsoft and also of Valve fame is not a fan of the direction that Microsoft is taking. In a recent interview he was quoted as saying; “I think Windows 8 is a catastrophe for everyone in the PC space.” This is something that we have been saying for a while now and for apparently some of the same reasons that Newell has; Microsoft’s recent moves to the cloud (forcing the use of Microsoft services) and also with locking out and competing with OEMs and partners. These decisions on the part of Steve Ballmer are the way to ruin the open platform that the PC was for gamers.
