Ever since the launch of the Surface tablet Microsoft has been going back and forth about their intentions with the new device. At one point Steve Ballmer made the statement that it was just intended as a “design point” to show the potential of Windows 8. He later made sales claims about the new devices and now could be starting to tell the truth about the direction that Microsoft is taking (one that we called some time ago). Ballmer is now saying that people will come to view Microsoft as a “devices-and-services company”. As it stands right now Microsoft will probably not be making all of the devices they would like to and Ballmer knows he has to walk a fine line between pushing Microsoft hardware and keeping the OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) happy.

Today Apple announced that they have received over 2 million preorders for the iPhone 5 in just 24 hours. This is twice as many as for the iPhone 4S. Apple's expectations were not so big so the preorders exceeded the initial supply. The first batch of devices will be delivered on September 21, while rest will be shipped in October. It looks like their promotions are giving fruit as this is a new preorder record for Apple. Since the first iPhone hit the market, their preorder were constantly increasing with every new model.

Google didn’t wait long to respond to Facebook's purchase of popular photo service Instagram. They went out and bought Nik Software an Instagram rival. The terms of the deal are not still known but it is believed that Google's main target was Snapseed. This is a part of Nik Software that is responsible for photo editing and is currently available for iOS, PC, Mac but also with an Android version on the way. It was probably easier for Google to purchase the whole company rather than just one of their apps, so they keep the same team and get all of their products without any concerns about copyright or patent infringements.

Today the Google apps team officially announced that their service will no longer support Internet Explorer 8 or any previous version of IE. This will influence a wide range of institutions that use Google's service and hopefully for Google they will update their workstations in time to be able to continue to use it. This decision will start on November 15th, which is after the launch of Internet Explorer 10.
It has been around 2 weeks now since I have lost a large group of my gaming friends to this Guild Wars 2. Now it has been announced that GW2 had sold over 2 million copies after they re-launched the sales. Now you are probably wondering what I mean by re-launched? Why would anyone stop their sales if they were going so good? The answer is because they appreciate their customers. If you played Diablo III then you know what happens if you just try to sell as many copies you want in the shortest time possible, you get overcrowded servers, all sorts of lag issues, users become unable to log in, and a bunch of angry gamers. The GW staff showed that they were ready for this, even after they had issues with swamped servers on the first day of the launch.
