As the Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 launch is rapidly approaching, Microsoft is trying to get as many partners as possible before it. This came in quite handy for Barnes & Noble as their biggest rival Amazon just launched the Kindle Paperwhite and sold the most units in the history of the Kindle family. Now Microsoft and B&N announced their partnership that will result in new subsidiary called NOOK MEDIA LLC. The book will be a joint venture of Barnes & Noble's NOOK Digital and College Business and the Microsoft Investment to Advanced Digital Reading Experience group.
Mark Zuckerberg announced today that “This morning, there are more than one billion people using Facebook actively each month”, and around 600 million of those are mobile users. The average age of Facebook users continues to decrees, as now is 22. When they hit 500 million users back in July 2010 the average age was 23. Zuckerberg also posted an interesting fact sheet, so according to that there have been over 1.13 trillion “likes” since the launch in February 2009, 219 billion photos uploaded, 17 billion location-tagged posts (check-ins included), and about 210,000 years of music has been played on Facebook so far.
Looks like WoW players prefer Dragons over Pandas since their latest expansion didn’t achieve as much success as the one before. “Mists of Pandaria” has been out for over a week now and during the first week of sales they sold 2.7 million copies. This is quite an impressive number, but still lower than Cataclysm sales as they sold 3.3 million in first week. Maybe the developers didn’t do as good on this one since the main highlight is discovering the new race of panda bears. In the Cataclysm dragon Deathwing destroyed Azeroth and it's quite obvious that world destruction by a giant dragon is more interesting than running around as a panda.
As expected, Samsung did excellent in the last quarter. They marked record profits of $7.3 billion, and even though there were many speculations that the iPhone 5 launch would ruin their success; obviously that's not what happened. These results are almost as twice as good they were the year before. It looks like the Galaxy S III and other high end Android devices were appreciated by the customers. They didn’t want to say much more on their profits as they will wait until October 26 for full-quarter results.
There have been some rumors going around that workers at Foxconn's factory, which assembles Apple's latest iPhone, have gone on strike making the production process completely paralyzed. However, Foxconn has denied all of that and stated that production is going as scheduled. Reports were saying that there are 3,000 to 4,000 workers on a strike at Foxconn's Zhengzhou complex last Friday that was triggered by over exaggerating quality controls on the iPhone production.
