Unlike their colleagues from BBC UK, The New York Times shows their maturity to deal with upcoming technologies. They have launched a new HTML5 web app for the iPad, and rumors are that they've done it to avoid Apple's high subscription fees that are inside the app. The app is available to both digital and home-delivery subscribers of their papers. The main goal for Denise Warren, senior VP and chief advertising officer of The New York Times Media Group, is to provide something new for their readers, and for them to have best reading experience no matter what platform they are reading the news on.
Gottfrid Svartholm was arrested last month in Cambodia, transferred to Sweden, and kept in jail ever since. There was a lot of speculation as to why was he arrested and when he landed in Sweden the authorities stated it was because of his involvement in hacking IT company Logica and stealing around 9,000 tax numbers. He wasn’t officially charged in the Logica case so by Law he should have been kept in prison for just a few days. After that period has passed the Prosecutor Henry Olin extended this term for two more weeks, and last Friday he's done it again.
Many of the new smartphones launched recently are still using the relatively low resolution of 1280x720 or similar. However, Sharp is looking to set a new trend here. As devices these days get faster processors, more RAM, bigger internal storage, displays still remain below full HD, even though 1080p has been around quite a while. Sharp wants to make new displays that will have 1920x1080 resolution with 443ppi. If you compare this to the Samsung Galaxy III with 1280x720 @306ppi, or Iphone's 1136x640 @326ppi it is quite an upgrade.
Amazon's new device, the Kindle Paperwhite will soon be shipping out from their warehouses and one of their biggest rivals Barnes & Noble won’t just sit around and wait to see what will happen. So far B&N has been at the top of the illuminated e-reader market and now Amazon wants their share of it too. The step B&N decided to take is to cut the price of their NOOK SimpleTouch with GlowLight device from $139 to $119, the same price that Amazon's Kindle Paperwhite will be selling. Even though it's pretty obvious that this is a reflex reaction to the Paperwhite launch, people at B&N say it has nothing to do with it.
